RFID Tracking Goes UHF
RFID tags have been used to track PCBs through the manufacturing process for a while. But Omnitrol Networks and Texas Instruments have teamed up to field a new RFID tag that can use a board’s ground plane as its antenna. Application specialist Chris Cook of TI and David Orain, vice president of marketing for Omnitrol, explain how the tag’s UHF frequency allows more robust operation.

Market Outlook: Resilience: Electronic Equipment Demand Holds in a Difficult Economy
The global electronics industry took a hit in early 2008. A combination of U.S. financial woes (which ultimately impacted consumer and business spending worldwide), the normal post-Christmas seasonal consumer electronics slowdown, Lunar new year plant closings in Southeast Asia, and heavy February snows in China combined to create a sharp downturn throughout the food chain. World PCB production plunged in January and February (Chart 1) and semiconductor shipments followed suit (Chart 2). The chip shipment downturn (dollar value) was further amplified by severe DRAM price degradation.

Omnitrol and TI Bring RFID to PCB Manufacturing
Omnitrol Networks and Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced an alliance delivering a radio frequency identification (RFID) product to PCB manufacturing applications. The product integrates Omnitrol Networks' Work-in-Process software and TI's Gen 2 RFID technology and provides electronic and contract manufacturers automated identifying and tracking of PCBs from the manufacturing floor to customer delivery. http://ti.com/pcbtracking
